Encore Live

Background

Encore Live is a platform where fans can connect with their favorite artists through live performances. When I joined the team, I led a comprehensive redesign of the app to address usability issues and enhance engagement. The redesign focused on creating a more intuitive user experience that encouraged fans to explore multiple shows and interact with the platform. This overhaul set the stage for Encore Live to increase fan engagement, support artist revenue, and stand out in the live streaming space.

Opportunity #1

Limited Discoverability of Shows

The Challenge
The Challenge

Before I took over as lead designer, the original home screen displayed only one show at a time, giving new users the impression that no other content was available on the platform. This limited users’ awareness of other live or upcoming performances and led to lower engagement, as they often missed out on exploring additional shows.

My Solution
My Solution

I redesigned the home screen to be more modular, displaying multiple sections such as “Happening Now,” “Featured Shows,” “Upcoming Shows,” “Recommended Artists,” and "Live Now." This layout provided a more comprehensive view of available content, encouraging users to explore and engage with different shows and artists. The updated design not only improved discoverability but also created a more dynamic and engaging user experience.

This redesign led to a significant increase in user engagement metrics, as users began exploring more content within the app. The new flow boosted visibility of multiple shows, increasing attendance and interactions across performances.

Opportunity #2

Low Engagement with “Claps”

The Challenge
The Challenge

While the app featured a “claps” monetization model and a leaderboard for top participants, users were not consistently engaging with claps. Most engagement was limited to artists occasionally requesting claps, resulting in low usage. This was also discouraging artists to do repeat shows.

My Solution

To incentivize consistent engagement, I refreshed the look of the leaderboard and helped develop two new features:

Backstage Pass

Fans at the top of the leaderboard were given an exclusive opportunity to video chat with the artist live, providing a personalized experience that motivated more users to aim for the top.

Live Polls

Artists could now ask fans questions like “What song should I perform next?” This interactive feature motivated fans to use claps more often, as their engagement directly influenced the show’s content.

Leaderboard

Fans would now get a special spot if they reached the Top 3 spot. More fans could also be seen at once using less screen real estate.

These features made engagement more rewarding and added excitement to the fan experience. As fans had more reasons to clap, the leaderboard became more dynamic, increasing artist revenue from higher engagement.

The Design System

The Encore Live design system is a comprehensive framework that provides visual and functional consistency across the platform. It is composed of clear guidelines on color palettes, typography, icons, buttons, and interface elements. The design system is tailored to foster engagement, enhance user experience, and maintain a cohesive brand identity.

Typography

Typography in the design system uses two primary typefaces. “Inter,” a versatile and modern sans-serif font, is employed for general readability and interface elements. “Anton,” a bold and impactful display font, is used for headings and callouts, striking a balance between clarity and visual appeal.

Color Palette

The color palette is vibrant and dynamic, featuring a mix of neon and bright tones such as yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, and orange. These colors are chosen to convey energy and modernity while enhancing interactive elements for visibility and engagement.

Iconography

The iconography is minimalistic and universally recognizable, designed to ensure intuitive navigation. It includes functional elements such as chat, leaderboard, sharing, and more, presented in a consistent line style that emphasizes coherence and simplicity.

Show Tiles

Show tiles in the design system are modular and adapt to various screen sizes and contexts. They come in large, medium, and small sizes and support various states, such as live, ticketed, or upcoming. Each tile provides key information like show names and times at a glance, maintaining a clear and engaging presentation.

UI Components

Buttons and interactive elements in the system are designed with versatility in mind. They include default buttons for general actions, glowing buttons to draw attention to primary actions, outline buttons for subtler secondary actions, and tiny buttons for compact spaces or specific functionalities like rewards. Button states such as active, inactive, and glowing are distinctly defined to ensure clarity.

This section of the Encore Live design system highlights key interactive components designed to boost user engagement. The Leaderboard, Chat, and Comments foster community interaction by recognizing top contributors, enabling real-time communication, and encouraging feedback. Features like Polls, Clap Goal, and the Show Dashboard provide intuitive ways for users to participate, track progress, and stay informed about live events. Together, these elements create a dynamic and engaging platform experience.

The profile and list elements reflect a dynamic, interactive environment. Profile screens feature interactive actions like clapping to unlock or play content, while the leaderboard and comments sections promote user interaction and foster a sense of community engagement.

Free Clap Progress is a feature that tracks user engagement and incentivizes activity through a progress bar and a rewards system. This feature includes clear stages, from “in progress” to “redeemable” and finally “completed,” each accompanied by visual indicators to guide users.
