Encore AR

Background

Encore AR is a platform designed to help artists and creators deliver immersive augmented reality (AR) performances to their audiences. When I joined the team, I led a complete redesign of the app to create a more intuitive and engaging experience. The redesign focused on empowering creators to produce dynamic, interactive AR content while ensuring the platform aligned with the needs of both artists and their audiences. This overhaul set the foundation for Encore AR to stand out as an innovative tool in the AR space.

Opportunity #1

Cumbersome and Restrictive Live Broadcasting

The Challenge

The original app required an iPad to broadcast and go live, and users needed a second person to operate it while they performed in front of the camera. This setup was cumbersome, impractical, and significantly limited the platform’s accessibility, as many creators lacked the necessary devices or support. Additionally, the phone version of the app was only used for setting up scenes, leaving its potential for live broadcasting and full functionality completely untapped, further restricting usability.

My Solution

I redesigned the app to allow creators to control the entire experience directly from an iPhone. This required translating the comprehensive controls previously designed for the iPad into a much smaller mobile viewport. To address the limited screen real estate, I created a dynamic interface where the controls adapted based on the current state to ensure the broadcast view remained visible at all times, allowing creators to manage their performances effortlessly.

Submenus for the toolbar were positioned on the bottom of the screen to ensure the broadcast view was always visible.

The redesigned app made live broadcasting more accessible and user-friendly, eliminating the need for additional devices or operators. By leveraging the full potential of the phone platform and designing for smaller screens with intuitive controls, Encore AR positioned itself as a unique and innovative tool in the immersive AR performance space, empowering creators to broadcast with unprecedented ease.

Opportunity #2

Limited User Engagement in Content Creation

The Challenge
The Challenge

Creating AR content on the original platform was overly complex, requiring advanced technical knowledge. Users were limited to built-in assets or the ability to upload assets from their own devices, which often felt restrictive. These constraints discouraged creators from fully utilizing the platform, limiting the variety and quality of AR experiences available.

I redesigned the entire app to create a more cohesive and intuitive experience. This overhaul included integrating AI-powered asset generation using DALL-E, enabling users to create custom AR elements with simple prompts. Automatic background removal further enhanced the realism of these assets, making them feel seamlessly integrated into AR scenes. The redesign improved navigation, usability, and aesthetics, transforming the platform into an accessible tool for creators.

The Design System

The Encore AR Design System provides a comprehensive framework for ensuring consistency and usability in the app's interface. It covers visual design, typography, icons, UI components, and interaction patterns. The system balances aesthetics with functionality to enhance user engagement and streamline the app's experience.

Color Palette

A vibrant selection of neon-inspired colors, reinforcing the app's modern and energetic identity while maintaining strong legibility and accessibility.

Typography

Utilizes two typefaces, "Inter" for readability in UI elements and "Anton" for display purposes like artist names, creating a clear hierarchy and visual impact.

Imagery and Icons

A library of custom 3D icons and simple UI icons ensures a cohesive style, catering to different use cases across the app.

Gradients and Legibility

Subtle gradients are used strategically to enhance UI legibility above the AR camera feed, maintaining visual clarity.

Buttons

A wide range of button styles, from large call-to-actions to smaller functional buttons, ensures flexibility across the app's interactive elements.

Elements

Includes various components such as segmented controls, input fields, and toggles, designed for intuitive interaction and a clean visual presentation.

Quick Action Menu

Provides quick access to key features such as video, audio, polls, fans, and connections, ensuring users can efficiently manage their live performances.

Video and Audio

Tools for managing camera and audio settings, including muting, flipping cameras, and checking audio levels, enhancing performance control.

Fans and Polls

Features for engaging with fans, such as direct messaging, leaderboards, and interactive polls, fostering stronger audience interaction.

Clap Goals

A gamified feature for setting milestones to collect claps, encouraging active audience participation during shows.

Record and Connect

Tools for recording performances and managing connected devices, providing seamless integration and functionality during live shows.
